Almost all laser printers have a maintenance interval or a suggested
page count when wearing items and or parts should be replaced some manufacturers such as hp & lexmark actually have the printer programmed to display "MAINTENANCE REQUIRED" messages on the display
at specific page count intervals typically at 200k pages for smaller laserjets
this does not mean your printer is broken its just a simple reminder that its time
to install some key components to help keep your printer performing like new.
Some customers dont see the value in installing a maintenance kit due to cost purposes and the printer is functioning fine so they just reset the maintenance counter so the annoying message is not displayed anylonger.
Unfortunately newer printers are requiring pin codes in order to reset the
maintenance cycle the photo below shows a 4250 printer in service mode
awaiting the pin code
I am not a believer in this because I find these same customers in a month or 2 calling in a panic because the printer is not functioning correctly and they need it repaired asap and 99% of the time its the same parts needed that would have been included in the maintenance kit.
